Canada’s Andre De Grasse won the men’s 200m at the Tokyo Olympics in 19.62 seconds, ahead of Americans Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles who took silver and bronze respectively.

It was a brilliant run for De Grasse, who had never won a world or Olympic title, despite being one of the best sprinters in the world for years. He won silver in the 200m at the 2016 Olympics and bronze in the 100m in Rio and Tokyo.

Lyles, the world champion, had been the favorite of the event but had to settle for bronze. De Grasse paid tribute to his rival at the finish line. “You push me, man, you motivate me,” he told the American.

De Grasse’s time was a personal best, as was Bednarek’s 19.68. Lyles finished in 19.74.

Erriyon Knighton, 17, the youngest men’s 200m finalist in Olympic history, was fourth.
