NEW YORK: Bianca Andreescu, the new open American champion, was greeted by a hero on Sunday. She returned to her hometown of Mississauga, Canada, for a celebratory rally, as Canadians adopted their own #SheTheNorth.

Andreescu, who defeated Serena Williams earlier this month to become the first-ever Canadian Grand Slam champion, quickly became a national favorite, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau among the crowd of adoring fans at the rally held in suburban Toronto.

"In Canada, anything is possible," tweeted Trudeau. "You are an inspiration, @Bandreescu_ and we are all so proud of you."

The rally was crowned by the unveiling of a street sign in honor of the 19-year-old "Andreescu Way".

"One day I will never forget," tweeted Andreescu, ranked fifth, with pictures of the crowd greeting the flag and cheering on the audience. "I feel so blessed!"
