In the United States, African Americans were barred from voting until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This law gave the federal government oversight over elections in many southern states, but in 2013, the Supreme Court overturned this rule. Mr Lebo said that since then voter suppression tactics have multiplied, especially those aimed at preventing African Americans, who vote overwhelmingly Democrats, from voting.
