Canon Unveils RF 5.2mm f / 2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens for VR Capture

Canon has announced what it describes as its first product for VR capture: the 5.2mm f / 2.8L Dual Fisheye RF Lens. It is capable of enabling 180 degree stereoscopic 3D virtual reality (VR) shooting on a single image sensor.

The new lens is designed to work on Canon RF camera systems as part of what the company calls the EOS VR system. The lens uses Canon’s high-quality L-series optics designed with an interpupillary distance – the space between two eyes – of 60mm to deliver 3D images in VR with what it calls a natural parallax that closely resembles to human vision. The lenses are capable of filming with a 190-degree field of view captured from two separate optical systems, which they say is perfect for completing 180-degree VR footage.

Canon says the lens features subwavelength coating technology that provides “impressive” stray light control even in backlit conditions, which will allow VR creators to have the freedom to take pictures regardless of the time of day or the position of the sun.

The lens has an electronically controlled aperture set with a range of f / 2.8 to f / 16. It also has a dust and water tight seal as well as a fluorine coating which when paired with R5 allows it to perform even in harsh weather conditions. Canon says that from an operational standpoint, the dual fisheye lens works like any other RF lens. Canon’s free Camera Connect app and Canon’s EOS Utility program will both be updated in the future to also offer remote live view functionality for monitoring purposes.

The lens has a close focusing distance of 7.87in / 0.2m and a maximum magnification of 0.03x. It also has a built-in gelatin filter holder that allows the ND gel filters to be used in bright environments without the need to stop the lens.

Canon claims that the workflow of the EOS VR system is particularly impressive and because it can record left and right fisheye images on a single full-frame image sensor and therefore bypasses the common challenges of stitching and synchronization. since the images are output as a single image file.

Canon is currently developing two paid subscription software solutions to complete the post production process. Canon’s EOS VR utility will provide the ability to convert clips from double fisheye images to equirectangular images and perform quick edits, as well as select resolution and file format before exporting.
