If you follow the world of electric vehicles closely, you may have heard of Canoo. Launched by former Faraday Future members, the company broke cover in 2019 with a subscription-only electric van built on a low-profile skateboard chassis. In December 2020, after a few management changes, Canoo showcased a delivery van using that same platform, then went public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company. Later today, the company was going to reveal a third EV – the adorable pickup you see in the gallery above – but someone leaked the footage to Reddit a day earlier.
The pickup certainly looks striking. If it looks like anything else on the road, it’s probably one of those Japanese microvans, although the Canoo pickup is a full-size vehicle measuring 184 inches (4677mm) long. and 78 inches (1980 mm) wide.
Like Rivian’s upcoming R1T and Bollinger’s B2, the Canoo pickup demonstrates the advantage of electric powertrains when it comes to packaging. Canoo’s skateboard deck is particularly low, which allows for a very advanced cabin design. There is cargo storage built into the nose of the truck, as well as side storage bins that also function as steps, similar to the ones we’ve seen from Rivian.
Canoo says the pickup is “designed to be exponentially more productive,” whether it’s for people who need a work truck or something to go on an adventure. in quite handy, as are the multiple AC power points. There is an extendable section to the pickup bed, which allows it to carry a load of 4 feet by 8 feet, and there are also modular dividers for the bed. The pickup won’t go into production until 2023, so it’s too early to have full specs, but Canoo says the vehicle should be available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with up to 600bhp (447 kW) and a range of at least 200 miles (321 km). There’s also no word on the price, but Canoo said a base model of the delivery van is expected to cost $ 33,000, so pickup could end up being relatively affordable.
