Capcom still hides Ethan’s face in Resident Evil Village

While Ethan Winters may be the new face of resident Evil series, we still haven’t seen his true face. And it doesn’t look like it’s gonna change when Resident Evil Village launches May 7.

2017 Resident Evil 7 Biohazard marked a sea change for Capcom’s survival horror franchise. Rather than controlling the main character from a third-person perspective, players have put themselves in Ethan’s shoes via a first-person game. Resident Evil Village seems to pick up where its predecessor left off in more than one way: Capcom is still hiding Ethan’s face from us.

It makes sense on some level that we don’t see much of Ethan in the gameplay trailers. We are supposed to be Ethan, after all. That’s the whole point of the first person perspective. That said, I couldn’t help but laugh when I noticed Capcom had even hidden it in promotional assets. It’s almost as if Ethan himself is doing everything he can to keep his face a secret.

Take this artwork from last year, for example. Why is Ethan holding his gun like this? Does he feel it?

And this one, which is part of a new batch released after the Capcom showcase earlier this week. You’re going to have to see the great vampire lady to beat her in a knife fight, Ethan.

This third and final image was not given to the press in the United States but I have seen it proliferate in Japanese media as 4Gamer. It’s more understandable than the others – Ethan’s face would naturally be obscured when using a sniper rifle – but in context, this is just another example of the lengths Capcom is going to ensure that we never see our protagonist well.

I vaguely remember the fans coming up with theories when Resident Evil 7 was still new that Ethan’s face was never shown because he was going to end up being an important character that we already knew. Some even thought he might be a Chris Redfield clone or something ridiculous like that. These days, I’m happy to assume it’s a common gag among developers. No silly plot is needed.
