The Washington Capitals have finally returned home to Capital One Arena, and their first game back was a triumph against the New York Rangers.
The match started quickly with a goal from Chris Kreider in the first 21 seconds. The Capitals seemed sleepy. But Nicklas Backstrom saved the day with a goal late in the period. Only 21 seconds after that (a theme here), Michal Kempny scored five holes from the slot and gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead.
Tom Wilson scored his third power play goal of the season, but Brady Skjei scored a strange goal for the Rangers to finish the second period with a 3-2 lead for the Capitals.
Again, a quick Rangers goal tied the score at 3-3. Nic Dowd clearly did not want to lose this game, so he scored his sixth goal of the season. It was a game for those who called Nick / Nic because Nicklas Backstrom scored his second goal of the game for boys in red. The Rangers tied for 5-5 with two goals to extend the game.
A last goal of Evgeny Kuznetsov in overtime allowed the Capitals to score two points. To be honest, the goal could have been Ovechkin … .but as Kuzy said after the match, "it does not matter".
Capital Cities win 6-5 (OT)
- Nicklas Backstrom scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season. He is second in the team in points this year with 15 goals and 43 assists.

- Speaking of Tom Wilson, he was working at levels close to Tom Wilson's point. He scored the big power-play goal of the ball above (a rarity for the team's PP2 team, very icy), forcing Henrik Lundqvist to recognize his lower levels of beauty in a two-man battle. Wilson had a token on the shoulder throughout the match, but the third goal was keen when he found himself plunged into a drama after a dubious strike from Matt Niskanen.
