A United States Capitol Police officer died Thursday evening from injuries sustained during his fight with a pro-Trump mob who descended on the United States Capitol the day before.

Officer Brian D. Sicknick died around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Capitol Police said in a statement. He had been at the agency since 2008.

Mr Sicknick was responding to the riots on Wednesday and “was injured while physically engaging with protesters,” the agency statement said, although officials did not immediately clarify the nature of his injuries or how he had interacted with the crowd. After sustaining the injuries, Mr. Sicknick returned to his division office, collapsed and was taken to hospital.

“The entire USCP department expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Agent Sicknick for their loss, and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague,” the statement read. News organizations had prematurely reported his death earlier today when he was apparently still on life support.

Homicide investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department are involved in the case.

Mr Sicknick’s death brings the death toll from Wednesday’s chaos to five. One of the people involved in the pro-Trump rampage was shot and killed by a Capitol policeman inside the building. Three other people have died after suffering medical emergencies, officials said.

Authorities said around 50 police officers were injured as crowds swarmed barricades, threw objects, banged doors, smashed windows and overwhelmed some of the police who tried to resist the advancing crowd.

Capitol Police reported 14 arrests during the incursion, including two people detained for assaulting a police officer. Local police arrested dozens more, mostly for illegal entry and violations of the city’s Wednesday night curfew.

Steven Sund, the Capitol Police chief, resigned Thursday after coming under pressure from congressional leaders.
