Capitol Police: 6 police officers suspended for alleged roles in riot

“Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman has ordered that any member of her department whose behavior does not adhere to departmental rules of conduct be subjected to appropriate discipline,” department spokesman John Stolnis told CNN.

CNN reported in January that USCP had placed at least 10 agents under investigation and two more had been suspended.

One of the suspended officers took a selfie with someone who was part of the crowd that passed the Capitol, according to Rep. Tim Ryan, a Democrat from Ohio. Another wore a “Make America Great Again” hat and started leading people around the building, Ryan said.

Last month, Pittman said the department “has actively reviewed videos and other open source material from certain USCP officers and officials who appear to violate departmental regulations and policies.”

The suspensions and inquiries come at a time of internal unrest within the department as officers continue to fight the insurgency that led to the death of Constable Brian Sicknick. Members of the Capitol Police cast a vote of no confidence against the force’s top leaders earlier this month.
At least seven officers from five other departments across the country have been the subject of internal investigations as their presence in Washington during the assault is revealed through social media or other means.

An officer in New York, one in Philadelphia, two in Seattle, two in Virginia and one in Texas are under investigation by their services for possible violations of the rules. In addition, some departments have been contacted by the FBI as part of their criminal investigation into the Capitol overtaking.

The number may rise as investigators and the public sift through social media and file allegations that officers may have been involved in the siege.
