U.S. Capitol Police suspended an officer Monday after a congressional aide saw a copy of an anti-Semitic document near a Capitol Hill checkpoint on Sunday, The Washington Post reported.
Photographs obtained in the mail show a printed copy of the protocols of the meetings of the wise scholars of Zion on a table near the security post inside an entry point to the Longworth House office building.
The libretto is described by the Anti-Defamation League as a “classic of paranoid and racist literature” which claims to “set forth the alleged secret plans of Jewish leaders seeking to achieve world domination.”
According to the Post, around 7 p.m. Sunday, a member of House staff spotted and photographed the newspapers as they left the Longworth building through the entrance to South Capitol Street.
On Monday morning, the Post provided the photographs to Capitol Police and asked for comment.
On Monday evening, Capitol Police told The Hill in a statement that the department’s acting head, Yogananda Pittman, had ordered the suspension of an officer after the discovery of anti-Semitic material. The officer will remain suspended pending the outcome of an investigation by the Ministry’s Professional Accountability Office.
“We take all allegations of inappropriate behavior seriously,” Pittman said in a statement. “Once this matter was brought to my attention, I immediately ordered the suspension of the agent until the Professional Liability Office could conduct a full investigation.”
According to the Post, it is not known who owned the document when it was found. The photographs show tattered and stained pages held together by a binder clip and a date stamp indicating it was printed in January 2019, the Post reported.
Zach Fisch, the chief of staff of Representative Mondaire Jones (DN.Y.), said he photographed the document and then provided it to the Post. Fisch said he was “extremely shaken” by the insurgency on January 6 in which rioters were seen wearing anti-Semitic clothing, including one person pictured wearing a shirt marked “Camp Auschwitz”.
Some members of the Capitol Police Department were monitored for their actions during the riot in which videos show rioters easily bypassing security, which included breaching the Senate chamber.
