The United States Capitol Police Union on Monday pronounced a “crushing vote of no confidence” on the senior leadership of the United States Capitol Police.
The vote comes after the Executive Council of the Capitol Police Union last week called on its members to consider a vote of no confidence in the mismanagement by senior officials of the January 6 riots on the U.S. Capitol.

The council said it decided to hold a vote after considering the events of January 6 and preceding it, which resulted in the deaths of six people and around 140 injured Capitol and Metropolitan Police.
“Last week’s impeachment trial showed members of Congress and across the country devastating details of the violence that Capitol Hill police faced during the insurgency,” union president Gus said. Papathanasiou in a statement. “It was the darkest day in the history of the department.”

The union said 92% of its members voted to distrust interim leader Yogananda Pittman, who took on the role two days after the riots. Papathanasiou said there are leaders within the department who are better suited to leadership.
“We hope that the leadership of Congress and the entire Capitol Hill community will understand that continuing with the current leadership of the USCP is not an option,” he said.
“The current leadership is just a continuation of past regimes of this ministry and there must be accountability. Their failures are inexcusable. This vote, in which the majority of the leaders of the bargaining unit participated, shows that they have lost our confidence. The anger in this department is widespread and the trust that has been broken will not be regained. “
