Four-player co-op now extends to Captain Toad adventures
As a fan of the original Wii U, I no longer vaguely expected to play Super Mario 3D World + Bowser Fury “when the time is right” to want to play right away in February – and to feel good about that choice. I wasn’t mentally at that point until we saw what Bowser’s fury involved and learned that there would be co-op (albeit only for two players instead of the main campaign’s four-player hijinks).
It’s quite a turnaround. And curiously, it is a trajectory similar to that Pikmin 3 Deluxe – another really excellent Wii U gem that in my opinion was worth picking up for its additional multiplayer support.
That said, it looks like Nintendo is going the extra mile with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser Fury. As a game clip on Twitter shows today, the upgraded Switch title will have four-player co-op in Captain Toad puzzle levels. You remember? The lines are pretty blurry for me at this point.

Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World on Wii U was a solo affair (GamePad only), but on Switch Captain Toad will be joined by blue, green, and yellow toads – assuming you have an IRL save. You will “work together” to collect green stars. (And by that, I mean you’ll be bored.)
This is undoubtedly a small addition to the grand scheme of 3d world, one that a lot of people won’t fully use, but it’s important. When it comes to video game re-releases, the little touches always count.
