The 28-year-old rapper recently appeared on the cover of Footwear News in promotion for her upcoming collaboration with Reebok.
In the cover photo, Cardi is holding a shoe as several arms extend around her from her shoulders.
Indian Express reports that the outlet suggested on Instagram that the star was paying “homage” to the Hindu goddess Durga, comparable to the rapper because she “is a dominant female voice at a critical time.”

The resemblance, however, has sparked backlash and the “Bodak Yellow” musician has been accused of cultural appropriation online.
“Cardi b did not pay ‘homage’ to the Hindu goddess Durga by holding a shoe in her hand, it is a disrespect and in no way cultural appreciation,” said a reviewer on Twitter. “She can’t escape [sic] with that without addressing and apologizing for making fun of our culture. “
“Apparently it’s Cardi B paying ‘homage’ to the Hindu goddess Durga,” said another. “What a load of crap! This is downright racist.”

In an attempt to remedy the situation, Cardi took to Instagram on Wednesday to apologize, sharing a video post about her story.
“When I shot Reebok, the creator [team] said to me: “You are going to represent a goddess”, that she represents the strength, the femininity and the liberation “, said the rapper.” It’s something I love and I’m everything and I thought it was dope. “

Additionally, the star said she wouldn’t like people to disrespect her own religion, so she had no plans to do just that with the photoshoot.
“I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful, maybe I should have done my research and I’m sorry,” Cardi concludes. “I will do more research for the future.”

Meanwhile, Footwear News said in a statement to People magazine on Wednesday: “Yesterday we posted content from our exclusive Cardi B cover shoot. One of the images was meant to pay homage to the Hindu goddess Durga, and our intention was to show a powerful woman. However, we realize that we were not paying attention to certain cultural and religious perspectives and how that could be seen as deeply offensive. “
A Footwear News rep did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.
