7 Simple Makeup Tips That Give Rihanna Her Glow, According To Her Artist

If you’ve ever wondered why Rihanna’s skin still looks so amazing, we can confirm that it’s not all down to good genes or expensive facials. Whether she’s serving up jaw-dropping red carpet looks or more of a natural vibe, it’s Hector Espinal, her longtime friend and global makeup artist Fenty Beauty, who is behind her glow. With the nightlife on a hiatus, it’s safe to say that most of us don’t wear as much makeup as before, but there’s no denying the uplifting power of a touch of mascara and highlighter here and there. Ahead, Espinal reveals the tips and tricks her celebrity clients (including Rihanna, of course) swear by enviable everyday makeup in moments. Oh, and they’re all mask-compatible. Start With Skin Care “When people tell me they want ‘celebrity skin,’ I tell them to start with skin care,” says Espinal. “Without skin care, I can’t do makeup. It just doesn’t work. If you really take the time to hydrate, anything you put on top will look great. The minute you don’t, you’ll see a bit more texture. Of course, skin texture isn’t a bad thing, but if you want to minimize the appearance of dry pores, spots, or patches, hydrated skin is essential. “A good cleanser, tonic, and moisturizer followed by an eye cream, and you’re done,” says Espinal. He recommends Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer SPF 30 to hydrate the skin and protect it from UV rays. For even skin in a flash, Espinal combines a foundation pump with a primer or moisturizer. “I mix it with my fingers or a sponge and that’s it,” he says. According to Espinal, Rihanna loves building up thin layers of foundation for a natural, radiant end result. Her favorite is Pro Filt’r Moisturizing Foundation, which gives the skin a beautiful rosy effect when applied with a damp sponge. Three Steps to Natural Makeup While Espinal thinks makeup-free makeup is actually one of the most difficult to do (he tells us it often involves around 20 layers), there are three products he’s looking for. fast, natural makeup – and foundation is not involved. “I go straight with a concealer, usually Match Stix Matte Skinstick, which melts into the skin with just your fingers,” says Espinal. “Concealer is the fastest cheat to achieve this look because it’s like faking hours of sleep. Then I apply cream blush on the apples of the cheeks and lots of mascara for a really awake look. TikTokers are going wild for Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High mascara right now, while Espinal loves Full Frontal Volume, Lift & Curl mascara. Apply Concealer Strategically Many of us were introduced to makeup tutorials on YouTube, where loading concealer to cover dark circles or “bags” was one thing. But Espinal thinks a little goes a long way, and product placement is important. Instead of applying a corrector in a swath or triangle shape, Espinal targets the inner corner of the eye and the top in the cavity to cover up any darkness. He then mixes the concealer down to hide dark circles under the eyes. “Less is more,” he says. “Fingers are a great tool for mixing concealer, or you can use the tip of your sponge. But I always have a fluffy eyeshadow brush handy because it gives that nice polished airbrush effect. I prefer this to a flat concealer brush because it is much softer. Espinal also has a great tip for finding your perfect concealer shade: Instead of testing on the back of your hand, test the concealer on your inner forearm just below your wrist for much better color matching. The Fastest Tip to Glowing Skin Espinal says there’s a fine line between oily looking and dewy, and it all depends on the T-zone – basically your nose, forehead, and chin. “I make sure the T-zone is nice and matte,” says Espinal, who likes Invisimatte Blotting Powder to absorb the shine. Espinal likes versatile products and often uses a lip gloss (i.e. Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer) as a highlighter on the cheekbones. “Put some on the back of your hand and mix it with your finger, so it gives you the perfect dew without looking greasy,” he says. “If you want to look really natural, take some moisturizing face spray and spray it on the sides of your face to create a nice dewy effect.” Monochrome Makeup Suits Everyone Rihanna’s signature everyday look is monochrome makeup – match your cheeks to your eyes. You only need one product, which is the bronzer. “I feel like monochromatic makeup is right now,” says Espinal. “Using your bronzer, subtly sculpt your cheeks and also use it on your lids instead of the eye shadow. It really is the easiest look for everyone and all you do is finish it off with mascara and a touch of lip gloss. Espinal says to avoid creating monochromatic makeup using blush. “You have to be really careful here,” he said. “If you put blush on your eyelids, you have to be prepared for it to look like you’re having a bad reaction.” So stick to your favorite bronzer. Powder Foundation is a game-changer Not only will powder foundation feel much more comfortable under a face mask, but it will make your skin transparent in seconds, says Espinal. “I like to take a big bronzer brush and apply powder foundation all over my face for an airbrushed look. It doesn’t feel heavy or transferable, which is great if you’re wearing a mask, ”he explains. Espinal says he also sometimes ditch the concealer for a light coat of powder foundation to fade out imperfections and uneven skin tone because it looks a bit more natural. Restoring some shine with a lip gloss or highlighter on the top of the cheekbones is a must to ensure that the skin does not appear flat. Use blush to sculpt cheekbones When it comes to applying blush, Espinal has a great tip for lifting and sculpting cheeks. “Place two fingers directly on the sides of your nose and using the width you will know where to start applying blush,” he says. Basically, keep the space where your fingers rest without blushing. “Otherwise, you’ll look like you’re rinsing too much,” says Espinal. “Then work from the apples of your cheeks upwards.” Apply your blush too low, and it could drag your cheeks downward. Espinal sometimes skips the bronzer completely and goes around with blush for a more subtle look. Simply vacuum your cheekbones and apply to the hollow of your cheeks, working your way up to your temples. At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world.
