A significant free agent addition to the Arizona Cardinals is reportedly considering retiring after facing a personal issue during the offseason. Monday, Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported that cornerback Malcolm Butler faces a “personal situation” and that stepping away from the game is “on the table.”
Garafolo says multiple sources told him that Butler had been away from the facility over the past week while still trying to resolve the issue he was facing. Butler signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals this offseason worth $ 3.25 million to make up for the loss of Patrick Peterson. He will of course be remembered as the hero of Super Bowl XLIX for the New England Patriots, as he knocked out Russell Wilson on the goal line with seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Butler has spent the last three seasons with the Tennessee Titans, and the 31-year-old has had one of his best seasons of 2020. In 16 games played, he’s recorded a career-high 100 combined tackles, 14 assists defended and four interceptions. The Titans were forced to part ways with him this offseason due to declining cap numbers.
Understandably, little information has been given on what Butler is going through, but the team are hopeful that he will be able to resolve the situation successfully, or that another cornerback on their depth chart will be invited to step up. .
