In her first game since surgery in January to remove a cancerous kidney mass, Caris LeVert made her Indiana Pacers debut with 13 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes to help her team defeat the Phoenix Suns 122-111 on Saturday. .
LeVert admitted to feeling “heavy legs” as he struggled to regain his wind and fitness, but said he was satisfied with the results.
“A month and a half ago, two months ago, I didn’t even know if I knew I was even going to be here, especially so soon, just with everything that happened, so it’s definitely a level of gratitude and just happy to be on the pitch, ”said LeVert.
Emotionally, the Pacers organization tried to put LeVert at ease.
He hadn’t played in an NBA contest since Jan. 12 as a member of the Brooklyn Nets, before being traded to Indiana. The small lump on her left kidney was discovered during a team physical and medical test before the trade was finalized.
In LeVert’s debut in Phoenix, the Pacers ended a two-game losing streak in six losses in seven games. Two-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis had a triple double with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
Pacers coach Nate Bjorkgren has said he believes LeVert’s presence is a boost for the team. After the game, when the guard entered the locker room, his teammates celebrated his return with applause and support.
“Absolutely he energized our team and his character level is so high,” said Bjorkgren. “He’s such a good person. He’s been a great teammate throughout his absence so our guys were very happy to see him on the pitch.”
Bjorkgren expects “a lot more” from LeVert to move forward as he continues to adjust.
LeVert said it was the second time he’s been in a 5v5 action since his health ordeal.
“We have a resilient squad. We have great guys on the team, and they were in my ear throughout the game today, even before the game,” said LeVert. “I can’t thank these guys enough, and it’s going to be a special remainder of the season for sure, once everyone starts clicking and things like that. We played a great game in team.”
