The famed Food Network's chef, Carl Ruiz, died Saturday of a heart attack at 44, his colleagues said.

Ruiz, a Cuban-American who was part of the culinary scene, had just opened a restaurant, "La Cubana", in New York earlier this year.

According to the restaurant's website, Ruiz has opened restaurants around the world, has had a successful radio and television career, and has been showcasing world-renowned culinary events for more than two decades.

Ruiz's contemporaries paid tribute to their friend on social media for expressing their sadness after the loss.

His famous chef Guy Fieri, with whom Ruiz has associated himself over the years, wrote his heart was broken by the news.

"I do not have words to describe what a great friend he was to me and my family," Fieri tweeted. "His ability to make me laugh and smile in all circumstances has only been overshadowed by his leadership talent."

He added: "Over the years, I have met a lot of great people, but a friend like Carl is a friend on a hundred million. Carl 'The Cuban' Ruiz will always live in my heart and in those of all who loved him. "

"You taught us to make the most of every moment and not ask if that was the case!" tweeted the famous chef Jet Tila. "You left too early @carlruiz!"
