A J. Hinch's medical minute took a little longer than usual Wednesday, due to the fact that neither right-handed Aaron Sanchez nor short-term player Carlos Correa will be back in the game until 39 ;in September.
Both men were placed on the 10-day wounded list, while the Myles Straw and right-handed Cy Sneed utilities return from AAA Round Rock to align. Straw started Wednesday night in the left field while Hinch gave Michael Brantley a regular night off.
Hinch said that Correa and Sanchez had finished their work for the month because of the nature of their injuries – backache for Correa, painful pectoralis for Sanchez – and the approach of September's expanded lists.
"We are encouraged by what they do and where they will be when they resume their baseball activities," said the manager.
Hinch said Sanchez should resume his throwing program as the pain eases, but he expects the right-hander to regain his momentum during the regular season. His absence from the rotation will likely require the Astros to call on a Round Rock starter for Sunday's game against the Angels and the road series in Toronto that ends Sept. 1.
Brad Peacock is not an option as a starter starter, said the manager, because the Astros "have brought him back and recycled especially for his role of relief, and he will stay with that."
Meanwhile, right-hander Josh James, who has been on the injured list since the end of July, will start a round for Round Rock on Thursday in Memphis and will likely make another round of re-training this weekend.
"He's starting to go back to the game, which is really great and encouraging," Hinch said. "It's unlikely that he'll be with us before September unless things change."
