Carly Hughes left the ABC comedy series American Housewife due to “discrimination” and a “toxic” work environment.

The series regular released a statement to Deadline where it described the harsh working conditions that led to its decision to leave the series after four seasons.

“I was no longer able to work in the toxic environment created on American Housewife,” she said. “I made the decision to leave to protect myself from this type of discrimination.

Carly played the role of Angela on the series, with Doris (played by Ali Wong) and Katie (Katy Mixon) representing a trio of true friends in the town of Westport.

The group of women met each day for a “second breakfast” and talked about personal and professional issues.

“ As a black woman in the entertainment business, I feel a responsibility to stand up for what I deserve, what we all deserve – to be treated equally, ” she added in the statement. “I wish the show the best of luck, and I look forward to opening a new chapter and being able to seize the opportunities that lie ahead.

While Carly officially left the series in season four, she is appearing in the season five premiere, which was filmed before COVID-19 production ceased in March.

Hughes’ departure as the only regular in the Black series would have sparked a thorough HR investigation.

“ Carly was a valued member of the cast and we had hoped she would return to the show this season, ” an American Housewife spokesperson told the newspaper.
