Carmelo Anthony accepts bench role, notes ‘I had to swallow that pill’

During his media availability ahead of Portland Trail Blazers training camp, future Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony noted that he “had to swallow that pill” to get off the bench. That said, he noted that he was looking forward to playing this season for the Blazers, due to the way the team treated him.

Anthony noted that the clear communication from president of basketball operations Neil Olshey played a key role in his decision, as did his relationship with the organization and players Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. In Olshey’s availability, he explained that the Blazers see themselves as the stewards of Anthony’s legacy.

While Anthony acknowledged that it was difficult to accept not to start, he vowed to make it work, especially since he has “high hopes” for the Blazers this season.

Anthony joined the Blazers last November on an unsecured one-year contract. He re-signed with Portland during free agency.
