Carnival Cruise Line has had an eventful 2020 and 2021 so far.
Here are the main moves that have taken place for the Miami-based cruise line since the start of the pandemic:
Fantasy and inspiration abandoned
In July, Carnival sold two of the oldest ships, the Carnival Fantasy and the Carnival Inspiration. Although a buyer was not initially named, both ships were scrapped a few weeks later.
At the same time, the cruise line upgraded two other ships, the Carnival Imagination and the Carnival Fascination, to long-term immobilized status.
Both moves also meant several deployment changes, with homeport adjustments and more. The fastest change saw the cruise line abandoning its routes out of San Juan and Barbados to focus on mainland driving markets in the United States.
Delayed flash
Scheduled for March 2020, the $ 200 million dry dock at Carnivals Victory has been hit by the pandemic. The major refit, which involved renaming the ship Carnival Radiance, was initially scheduled to take place in Spain and last 38 days.
At the time, deteriorating conditions in Europe led to a total suspension of works. After postponing the refit a few times, Carnival is currently planning to complete it in September. Starting November 2021, the Radiance will replace the Carnival Inspiration and Carnival Imagination on the West Coast.
Imagination scrapped and fascination sold
After being moved to a long-term lay-up status, the Carnival Imagination and the Carnival Fascination ended up being sold.
Imagination was the first to leave, leaving the fleet in September. The ship built in 1995 went straight to Aliaga, Turkey, where she is currently being demolished.
The Fascination has been sold for an additional service. The ship left the fleet in October, heading for an Asian start.
Mardi Gras Delivered
In December, Carnival received the new Mardi Gras from the Meyer Turku shipyard. The LNG-powered vessel joined the brand’s fleet in Finland, ahead of its debut in the United States.
After being postponed a few times, the inaugural Mardi Gras cruise is currently scheduled for May 29 from Port Canaveral.
Back to service plans and dry docks
Currently, Carnival plans to resume service on May 1, 2021. Some of the vessels, however, will remain out of service due to the dry dock delay.
Additional cancellations impact cruises departing from Norfolk, Tampa and New Orleans with Carnival Magic, Carnival Valor and Carnival Paradise through October 31, 2021.
Carnival Splendor, Carnival Spirit, Carnival Legend, and Carnival Radiance also have different return times, linked to different reasons.
