Carnival admits six violations of probation
However, the cruise company did not respect his probation period, announced Monday the Ministry of Justice.
The company admitted six offenses, including forgery of two ships' environmental training records and deliberate dumping of plastic into Bahamian waters without accurately recording the illegal release.
"A company is responsible for the profitability of its shareholders and its board of directors, but not in breaking the law and destroying the very environment in which it sails for profit," said Ariana Fajardo. Orshan, District Attorney for South Florida in the United States, a statement.
In addition, Carnival intervened in court probation supervision by sending undisclosed teams on board ships to prepare for independent inspections. Even after the court found the first team and the judge ordered the cruise line to end the practice, Carnival persisted in this intention, said the Justice Department.
"Carnival has sought to avoid finding problems in audits rather than learning from them," said Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Bossert Clark of the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the United States Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Department of Justice in a statement. "Carnival's deliberate deception undermined the court's supervision of probation."
Carnival said it has entered into a new agreement with the Department of Justice.
"The Court approved our agreement with the Department of Justice – defining new initiatives, improved procedures, additional training and significant investments to ensure the strongest and most sustainable environmental compliance program possible" Carnival said in a statement.
"Carnival Corporation remains committed to environmental excellence and the protection of the environment in which we live, work and travel, and our aspiration is to leave the places we touch even better than when we first arrived."
The company added that it was considering creating a compliance committee, appointing a compliance officer, and developing strategies to reduce plastic and food waste.
