NEW YORK – Carolina Hurricanes forward Nino Niederreiter was fined $ 5,000 by the NHL on Wednesday for interfering with Nashville goaltender Juuse Saros, the maximum amount allowed under the collective agreement .

Niederreiter hit Saros high in a collision behind the net five minutes after the Hurricanes-Predators game on Tuesday night. He received a minor penalty of two minutes for brutality.

Saros remained in the net for the remainder of the first half before being replaced by Pekka Rinne to start the second. The Predators have only said Saros will be reassessed on Wednesday and have not provided any details on the nature of his withdrawal from the game.

“The referee called for a penalty,” Predators coach John Hynes said. “It was a blow to the head; we’ll have to see where it goes. There’s not much to comment on. What we’ve all seen is what happened.”

Saros allowed two goals after the collision and Nashville lost the game 4-2 after Rinne allowed one in 17 shots. Saros has started 12 of Nashville’s first 22 games, though Rinne plans to take the reins in the future.

Kasimir Kaskisuo would then be the Predators’ No. 2 goalie. Kaskisuo has an experience game in the NHL, allowing six goals on 38 shots last season with Toronto.
