Remembering when she decided to audition for the show, she told GuidePosts magazine: ‘The summer before my senior year I was home one day watching TV and I saw a report on people auditioning for American Idol, I checked online.

“The closest hearings were held in Saint-Louis. “How far is Saint-Louis?” I asked my mother. “Six or seven hours in the car,” she said. Too far, I thought. Out of the question. “Why do you want to know?” Mom asked.

“They have American Idol auditions over there.” “I’ll take you.” Just like that.’

Carrie said she expected the process to be easy, but remained “ terrified ” of performing in front of the jury.

She added: ‘It would be easy to tell the rest is history, as it was meant to be. But it wasn’t like that back then. Going through a series of auditions in St. Louis, getting the “golden ticket” to Hollywood, every candidate’s dream, I was terrified.

“ Every time I had to sing in front of the judges I would get nervous like I did in church the first time around. Then I said a prayer and left it in the hands of God.

Carrie’s parents were driving her to the airport when everything suddenly hit her.

“Suddenly it was too much. Going to Los Angeles on my own, competing with all these other talented people. I burst into tears. ‘

“My father turned to me in the backseat. “Carrie,” he said, “we can go home now, and we never have to talk about it again. I took a deep breath. “No,” I said finally. “I go.”‘

Carrie landed a ticket to Hollywood after convincing the judges during her audition with a performance of Bonnie Raitt’s song I Can’t Make You Love Me.

She went on to beat runner-up Bo Bice and was crowned the winner of American Idol season four.

She released her debut album Some Hearts later that year, which included hit tracks Before He Cheats and Inside Your Heaven.

Carrie is married to NHL player Mike Fisher and together they have sons Isaiah, five, and Jacob, one.
