Carsen Edwards went beyond the supernova for Purdue and, one way or another, that was not enough.

An ecstatic duel of the round of 16 between Virginia and Purdue on Saturday night ended in Boilermaker's heartbreak. Despite the superhuman efforts of junior guard Carsen Edwards, who tried hard to drag Purdue to the Final Four, the Cavaliers won an unlikely 80-75 win.

Edwards' performance worries no one but Steph Curry or Buddy Hield. He scored more than half of his team's points (42 total) on 14 shots out of 25, including 10 on three points. This is the craziest of all – a bank note with just over a minute to play that put his team at 69-67.

Virginia has done just enough to survive the regulations. After Edwards made the trey, the Hoos ended up with three fewer goals, with the ball 15 seconds from the end. The Boilermakers intentionally blocked Ty Jerome five seconds from the end, but Virginia managed to execute the highly improbable game "make the first, miss the second, get the rebound and score". It was Mamadi Diakite who managed a tap-out, Kihei Clark who kicked the ball beyond the half-court, Diakite who nailed the desperate setback to force OT, then everyone in Virginia who lost his head .

The teams traded their lead with less than a minute of overtime, but the game was unfortunately decided on some Edwards errors. In 76-75, seven seconds from the end, Edwards missed a three and, with one last chance after Kyle Guy made two free throws, his misplaced pass put an end to Purdue's hopes.

This is Virginia's first final since 1984. They will play in Auburn or Kentucky in a week.
