Carson Wentz’s trade “may not be as fast as some think here”

So when will this Carson Wentz trade finally take place?

On Friday, the Inquirer reported that a deal was “done.”

On Saturday, ESPN reported that the Eagles “are expected to trade Carson Wentz in the next few days.”

On Monday, NJ.com writer and BGN alumnus Mike Kaye cited a source who expects the deal to happen today or tomorrow.

This may always be the case. But … maybe not?

Mike Garafolo was all over the place during a Monday afternoon press stunt for NFL Network:

“I think a lot of people thought, ‘OK, the Super Bowl is going to be over, and this morning this trade is going to be finalized.’ I called everyone involved in this one and was told nothing was imminent. That the Eagles are basically waiting for an offer that they think is worth trading Carson Wentz. And one of the options still on the table – I don’t think it’s likely – is that they don’t get an offer they deem worthy and say, ‘OK, Carson Wentz, come to training camp. ”. I believe that in the end he will be traded and that they will receive an offer that will cause them to part ways with Wentz. I still don’t see a way back to the Eagles. I said on WIP radio in Philadelphia last week I was 50-50 but when I was with them I said I was officially at 51-49 he was traded and I don’t think not that I go back to 50-50. So I’m almost 100% sure that it will eventually be traded. But it might not be as quick as some think here. The Bears and Colts are among the teams involved. I’m told there are more teams involved and I’ll also tell you that the Bears and Colts have other quarterbacks they’re watching. So a lot of moving pieces, a lot of chess, a lot of poker being played here. I can’t really put you on a schedule here. I think it’s traded, I can’t tell you how fast, but it could be relatively quick.

Some thoughts on all of this:

  • We keep hearing that the deal is “done” and yet nothing is “imminent”. OKAY. Useful.
  • That a report like this is leaking tells me that the Eagles are not very happy with the offers they have received so far. I can’t buy the Eagles just by bringing Wentz back for 2021 at this point. And teams also can’t make offers for Wentz that aren’t as lucrative as the Eagles would like.
  • “More teams involved” sounds like an attempt to make Wentz’s assets appear more competitive than they actually are. Then again, Tony Pauline said the San Francisco 49ers’ interest in Wentz cannot be ruled out. So maybe there really are other teams out there.
  • There is a danger in waiting for the best possible deal. That’s not to say Howie Roseman should jump on what’s on the table right now. But Roseman runs the risk of overplaying his hand here as this saga goes on.
  • At 9:32 a.m. EST this morning, Windy City Gridiron contributor Brandon Robinson said he was awaiting news from Wentz.Within 24 hours. He also added this:

I believe he is referring to Bears fans who are upset about the compensation. If that’s true, a good sign for Eagles fans.

  • Lots and lots of rumors. To be determined when we finally have some clarity.
