You may find yourself looking at footage of crowds storming the United States Capitol. And you might find yourself watching fellow citizens attack law enforcement officers in the name of a baseless conspiracy, and you might find yourself watching these beautiful corridors of our democracy ransacked. And you may ask yourself, how did we get to this?
The past four turbulent years have divided us in two. Americans now live on two completely different political planets, with two seemingly irreconcilable points of view. If you’re a Trump supporter, you’ve seen his presidency as four awesome years of owning libs, pushing back the deep state, and watching the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln make America great again. If not, you’ve just lived through four hellish years observing the standards, the laws, the country’s position in the world – even the foundations of democracy itself – being devastated by an amoral narcissist who doesn’t didn’t care about the mess he left in his wake.
By editing POLITICO’s Cartoon Carousel, a weekly compilation of cartoons from all political backgrounds, I saw these divisions harden in real time. While liberal cartoonists have described Trump’s presidency as a series of growing horrors, their right-wing counterparts have turned the famous businessman into something of a folk hero on a crusade. The differences have never been more extreme than they were last Wednesday, as a group of pro-Trump rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol to try to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the elections.
