“‘Cats’ was completely wrong.”

Cats hit theaters at the end of 2019 and blew the world away with its horrific cat-people hybrids, questionable CGIs, and wild character names. Rebel Wilson like Jennyanydots the Gumbie cat? Get out of here. But despite its failures as a film, the musical created by Andrew Lloyd Weber is one of the oldest shows on Broadway. The first one? Lloyd Weber’s other show The Phantom of the Opera. But it hasn’t been easy for Lloyd Weber since the film premiered. Variety spoke to the famous Broadway songwriter about the reopening of Broadway and more, but he gave us all a glimpse of his feelings on the film adaptation. In fact, he seems to hate it so much that it made him buy a dog.

“The cats were completely wrong,” says Lloyd Webber. “There wasn’t really an understanding of why the music worked. I saw it and I just thought, ‘Oh, my God, no. “It was the first time in my 70s or so on this planet that I had gone out and bought a dog. So the only good thing to come out of it is my little Havanese puppy.”

Lloyd Weber went on to explain how close he and the pup got together during the lockdown and how he found a way to bring the dog with him to New York City despite the travel restrictions. “I canceled and said I needed him with me at all times because I’m emotionally damaged and need to have this therapy dog,” says Lloyd Webber. “The airline responded and said, ‘Can you prove you really need him? And I said ‘Yeah, just watch what Hollywood did to my musical’ Cats ‘.’

Now personally I didn’t mind Cats as much as I thought. I still didn’t like it, but I was pleasantly surprised at how absolutely wild the movie was. A more “serious” version of Cats wouldn’t work, so Lloyd Weber saying this movie destroyed his musical is a bit too dramatic. Mr. Mistoffolees has done nothing wrong in his life. Cats might not be the best adaptation of a musical, but it’s also Cats, a musical about a gang of cats in an alleyway about death and being Jellicle’s choice. So they did their best with what they could. Maybe the CGI was a mistake though.
