Mark Cavendish took to social media on Friday night to address a public outburst that was filmed ahead of the start of stage 19 of the Tour de France.

“My bike had some problems when I rode it this morning. Despite that, I shouldn’t have reacted the way I did and not so publicly, ”Cavendish later wrote on social media. “I have been an extremely close friend of my mechanics for over a decade and they have worked tirelessly to ensure that I have always been safe and successful. While they know how small I can be when I’m stressed, no one, especially those you care about, deserve to be spoken to.

Cavendish’s post-stage comments came hours after he was seen trying out a newly adjusted bike given to him by a Deceuninck-QuickStep mechanic, then hitting the front of the bike on the ground, de return the bike, scream his frustration and storm the team bus.

The incident was caught on both television cameras and roadside fans, and videos appeared on social media the day after the scene.

In his social media post discussing the incident, the 36-year-old Manxman said he and the rest of the team had ‘talked about what happened’ and ‘would do our best to finish successfully’ the tour of France.

With two stages remaining in the race – one of which is expected to end in a sprint – Cavendish is currently tied with Eddy Merckx for stage victories on the Tour.
