Libourne, France (AFP) – Mark Cavendish apologized to his mechanics on Friday for a Tour de France scam after a video was released showing he complained about his bike before rushing to the bus from the ‘team.

Footage showed the 36-year-old British sprinter checking the feel of the front of his bike before yelling at his team’s mechanic and slamming his front wheel into the ground before the start of the 19th stage between Mourenx and Libourne.

“During a day of the Tour de France, as riders we were put in a perilous situation and I wanted my bike to be perfect, in order to help me stay safe,” he wrote on Instagram more late Friday.

“My bike had some problems when I rode it this morning. Despite this, I should not have reacted as I did and not so publicly, ”he wrote. “I have been an extremely close friend of my mechanics for over a decade and they have worked tirelessly to ensure that I have always been safe and successful. While they know how small I can be when I’m stressed, no one, especially those you care about, deserve to have their voice raised.

Cavendish is said to have set a new record of 35 Tour de France stage wins with his fifth victory in the 2021 edition on Friday. He had already equaled the record of 34 stage victories of 46-year-old Eddy Merckx. But an early massive fall and the unwillingness of other teams to stop a breakaway allowed a large group to build up a big lead over the main field.

“I still have Paris,” he said of the sprint finish on Sunday on the Champs-Elysées. “And I still have the jersey,” he said as he left the awards ceremony in the sprint points leader’s green tunic.

Cavendish was added to the Deceuninck squad list late, but has won four stages on the 2021 Tour with a possible fifth on Sunday when the race concludes in the French capital.
