Cawthorn files ethics complaint after altercation with McKinley staff

Representative Office David McKinley (RW.V.) filed a complaint with the House Ethics Committee against First Year Representative Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) after a verbal altercation with a staff member over ‘confusion over his name put on the wrong piece of legislation.

The incident took place just before a heated confrontation between McKinley and Cawthorn on the house floor, with some claiming it seemed the two lawmakers were on the verge of a physical fight.

A source with direct knowledge of the incident in McKinley’s office said Cawthorn walked in uninvited and requested that his name be removed from the law, which concerned the price of drugs in rural communities in low income, but he thought it was related to the abortion.

After being informed by an assistant that his staff had received instructions on how to have Cawthorn’s name removed, and he was informed that he was not related to the abortion, he said he ” was looking for a fight today ”and“ hinted that he would come up with abortion promos just to put (your) boss’s name on it.

A McKinley staff member apologized to Cawthorn for the confusion over the co-sponsorship, the source added.

According to the source, Cawthorn was told by staff that he should discuss the matter with McKinley who was upstairs in the house, to which Cawthorn responded by calling the West Virginia Republican “the guy with the mustache that no one knows “. He also threatened to back a main challenger against McKinley during their feud on House soil.

They added that Cawthorn got “in front” of the staff member before saying “don’t speak out against me.” I am a member of Congress. Sources confirmed they had not raised their voices to the North Carolina Republican.

Cawthorn then attempted to work things out with the staff member in a note obtained by The Post.

“I don’t want any hard feelings between our offices. I heard that you are a clever one [staffer’s position] and I feel lucky to have you on this move. Hope we can put our differences behind us and our offices can focus on our real opponents [sic] threatening our republic, ”he wrote.

“If I can be of any help to you, please do not hesitate to contact me, if it is in my power, I will be happy to help you. Your ally, Representative Madison Cawthorn.

It is not known if the House ethics committee will go ahead with an investigation.
