One of the best players in the country, and one of Michigan’s top targets across the 2022 class, has just left the board. Five-star cornerback Domani Jackson has just signed up for USC.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from Santa Ana, Calif., Chose USC from the rest of its top six list, which included the Wolverines, Ohio State, Clemson, State of the Arizona and Oklahoma.
Jackson visited Michigan for the first time in November. He got to see Ann Arbor up close with another top 2022 class cornerback Will Johnson, five-star in the state. Although this is a “global deal” it appears Johnson is in no rush to make his decision.
Jackson is an elite talent, scoring 4.51 on his 40-yard scorecard and 4.25 on his commute time at the 2019 regional opener. 247Sports’ Brandon Huffman compares Jackson to the current New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore:
“An athletic, good-sized cornerback with speed (4.5 hours and forty in first year), speed and explosiveness. Still relatively new to the position, making the transition from catcher, but has shown elite-level coverage, ball skills, play diagnosis and closing speed. Plays with physique, can knock and press but also play and defend the pass. The smooth back pedal and quick hips make it a natural corner player. Plans as an immediate Power 5 contributor and potential NFL first-round pick.
Even though he’s now verbally committed to USC, the Wolverines aren’t going to give up on signing him just yet. Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb ($) wrote on Friday night that new defensive co-coordinator and cornerback coach Maurice Linguist spoke with Jackson and his dad on Wednesday night. The linguist probably knew what Jackson’s hiring decision would be when he made that call, so don’t expect Michigan to pull out of this race just yet.
I think two things will play a big role for the Wolverines on the road to Jackson. The first thing to do is to earn / get the corners good under Linguist. We obviously won’t see how it goes until September. But the second factor, which could come much sooner than September, is Johnson’s decision. If Michigan can get Johnson to sign up, I think that would go a long way in helping Jackson turn around. Keep your fingers crossed, folks.
Jackson is the No. 1 cornerback, No. 1 player in California, and No. 3 overall in the 2022 class, according to the 247Sports composite.
