LONDON – The developers of Cyberpunk 2077 are delaying the release of new content for the game in order to focus on fixing bugs and crashes.

Polish game developer and publisher CD Projekt launched the highly anticipated sci-fi epic last month. It came under fierce criticism for posting what many fans and critics considered to be an unfinished game.

Cyberpunk was one of the hottest big-budget video games of 2020. But it was plagued by a slew of bugs and performance drops on older consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One.

CD Projekt has sought to appease fans with the promise of refunds and game upgrades. But that hasn’t stopped Sony from removing Cyberpunk from its digital PlayStation Store, a move that many industry analysts have called unprecedented. for a triple-A title.

Marcin Iwiński, co-founder of CD Projekt, apologized in a video posted on the game’s YouTube channel on Wednesday.

“Despite good reviews on PC, the console version of Cyberpunk 2077 did not meet the quality standard we wanted it to meet,” said Iwiński. “Myself and the entire management team are deeply sorry for this and this video is that I publicly admit it.”

“Please don’t blame any of our teams for what happened,” he added. “They are all incredibly talented and hard working.

“The board and I are the last decision-makers, and it was our call to get the game out. Although, believe me, we never intended for anything like this to happen. . “

Iwiński explained that most of the game’s issues on older hardware were the result of his high PC ambitions. Cyberpunk is “high-profile,” he said, bringing together a “multitude of custom objects, systems and mechanics interacting” in “one big city and a relatively load-free environment.”

“We made it even harder for ourselves by wanting to make the game look epic on PCs and then tweaking it for consoles, especially old folks” like the PS4 and Xbox One, “he said. -he adds.

Iwiński said that CD Projekt’s planned release of free downloadable content, or DLC, to accompany the main game will be delayed as developers rush to fix the many issues and crashes players have encountered.

“We have decided to focus on the most important fixes and updates first, and then we will release the DLCs afterwards,” said CD Projekt co-founder.

He added that versions of the game for Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen consoles will be released in the second half of the year. Players can currently only play the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk on the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X systems.

CD Projekt stock was up 2% on Thursday morning. The gamemaker’s share price has fallen about 38% since Cyberpunk’s release on December 10.

“We take this whole situation very seriously and are working hard to remedy it,” Iwiński said on Wednesday. “The guiding principles of our company are always at the heart of what we do, we always want to create amazing games and have open communication with you our players.”

In addition to the controversy over Cyberpunk’s failed launch, CD Projekt has also been accused of “crunch culture,” a common problem in the gaming industry that sees developers working long hours to complete a game on time. Cyberpunk was delayed three times before its release.

“The team is working to make relevant fixes to the game without any mandatory overtime”, CD Projekt Red you add Red here? said Wednesday in an update. “Avoiding the tightening of all our future projects is one of our main priorities.”
