New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has increased the number of counties in Pennsylvania that have substantial or higher levels of COVID-19 transmission.

There are 25 counties, including Dauphin, Lebanon and Lancaster, which have shown increased rates of community transmission of COVID-19. On Monday, CDC data reflecting through July 31 showed only nine counties with significant transmission. New CDC data now includes cases reported on Sunday. The positivity rate still uses data that was reported between July 24 and July 30.

In addition to central Pennsylvania, other areas of substantial COVID-19 transmission are concentrated in the eastern and western parts of the state, including Allegheny and Philadelphia counties. Only one county, Crawford, has a high transmission rate.

The CDC recommended last week that counties with substantial or higher transmission levels revert to indoor masking.

The increase in transmission matches data from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Health. The state recorded more than 3,000 new cases of COVID-19 between Friday and Sunday, with a subsequent increase in hospitalized and intensive care COVID patients. The state reported more than 1,400 additional cases on Tuesday.

The CDC determines the transmission rate by studying new cases per 100,000 people and the positivity rate for new tests, both within the past seven days. High transmission counties have between 50 and 99 new cases per week, high transmission counties over 100.

When it comes to positivity rates, counties with high transmission have a positivity rate between 8% and 9.99%, while those with high transmission have a positivity rate above 10%.
