Fully vaccinated people no longer need to self-quarantine after being exposed to someone infected with the coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday.
Yes, but: The CDC’s definition of “fully vaccinated” is narrow. The agency calls for caution regardless of vaccine status, especially as new variants continue to spread.
Details: Because the two currently licensed vaccines require two doses, the CDC defines a fully vaccinated person as someone who meets the following criteria:
- Waited two weeks or more after the second shot in a series of two shots.
- Is within 3 months of receiving the final dose of the series.
- Remains asymptomatic since exposure to COVID-19.
Those who don’t meet all three criteria should be quarantined for two weeks, according to CDC guidelines. Fully vaccinated people should also watch for symptoms.
What they say: “This recommendation to forgo quarantine for people immune to vaccines is consistent with quarantine recommendations for people with natural immunity, which makes it easier to implement,” the CDC said.
