The Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) have updated their requirements for international travelers to the United States. Travelers must now show proof of a negative COVID-19 test or recovery from COVID-19 before flying. This ordinance comes into force on January 26, 2021.
These new guidelines apply to all air passengers two years of age or older. This includes anyone traveling to the United States, including U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.
Several presidential proclamations have established restrictions on the entry of some travelers to the United States in an effort to help slow the spread of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Some foreign nationals who have stayed in certain countries in the past two weeks still cannot enter the United States. If you are otherwise authorized to travel, you must have a viral test (NAAT or antigen test) no later than three days before your flight departs. You will need to present the documentation of your results to the airline before boarding. This documentation can be a hard or electronic copy of your results. Travelers who have received a COVID-19 vaccine must still provide a negative test result.
If you’ve recently recovered from COVID-19, the CDC does not recommend getting tested again within three months of having a positive viral test, as long as you have no symptoms. But if you’ve had a positive viral test in the past three months, you may still be able to travel. If you meet the stated criteria and can show proof of your positive viral test results and a letter from your health care provider or public health official stating that you are authorized to travel, you should be able to board a flight. The test result and the letter constitute your “recovery documentation”.
Any passenger who does not provide a positive test result or recovery documentation will be refused to board a flight.
