(Gray News) – A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention draws an extremely clear picture of the opioid epidemic in America.
In the five years between 2011 and 2016, the number of fentanyl-related deaths increased by more than 1,000%, from less than 1,700 to more than 18,000.
"Between 2011 and the third quarter of 2013, there were fewer than 500 fentanyl deaths per quarter," the report said. "Between the last quarter of 2013 and 2016, the number of fentanyl-related deaths increased almost every quarter to more than 5,800 deaths."
The number of deaths increased in all age groups, but was highest among 15 to 34 year olds.
The number of deaths was higher among minority groups and men tripled the rate of women.
