Celebrate First Contact Day with this Star Trek: Discovery S4 Trailer

Actress Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays a key role in the series, has revealed the first trailer for the fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery, during First Contact Day 2021, a virtual event organized by Paramount + with panels, livestreams and news from various Star Trek Properties.

Martin-Green plays Michael Burnham, an orphan human raised on the planet Vulcan by none other than Sarek (James Frain) and his human wife, Amanda Grayson (Mia Kirshner) -aka, parents of Spock (Ethan Peck). She is therefore Spock’s adopted sister. As I wrote previously, the Season S2 arc involved the mysterious appearances of a rogue “red angel” and Starfleet AI called Control who sought to wipe out all sentient life in the universe.

The big reveal was that the Red Angel was actually a time travel costume worn by Michael’s birth mother. She had accidentally jumped 950 years into a dark future in which Control had achieved its nefarious goal and traveled through time leaving signals (the visions of the red angel), hoping to change that future. In the S2 finale, Michael donned a copy of his mother’s costume to direct Discovery more than 900 years in the future. The crew of the Company told Starfleet that Discovery was destroyed in battle and ordered never to speak of the ship or its crew again.

In S3, Michael, Discovery and his crew arrived in the future and found that Control’s plan had been thwarted: life still exists. But the galaxy was very different thanks to something called The Burn, a catastrophic event that blew up all of the Milky Way’s dilithium and destroyed much of Starfleet in the process. In the process, without possible distortion entrainment, all the planets had disconnected and were no longer governed by the Federation. Michael, however, managed to locate a single Federation Liaison Officer on a remote space station with the help of a new ally, Book (David Ajala).

It turned out to be another good season for the show. As Kate Cox d’Ars noted in her review last year, “S3 is absolutely Star Trek in the classic mold, where problems can be solved, where diplomacy can reign, where astute Starfleet officers can think of breaking out of any trap, and where the Federation and its ideals are good, in fact, for this fallen world. “

the Discovery The crew tracked down what was left of Starfleet, uncovered what caused The Burn, and succeeded in defeating a rival Syndicate known as the Emerald Chain, inspiring the planets to begin joining the Federation. Burnham eventually became Captain of Discovery after Saru chose to return to his home planet of Kaminar for a spell. And we said a sad farewell to Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh); a derivative series is reportedly in the works.

According to the official synopsis, in S4 “Captain Burnham and the crew of the Discovery of the USS face an unparalleled threat. With the federated and non-federated worlds feeling the impact, they must face the unknown and work together to ensure a hopeful future for all. “

In addition to Martin-Green, a lot of the main cast is also returning for S4: Doug Jones as Saru, Anthony Rapp as Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Tilly, Emily Coutts as Keyla Detmer, and Wilson Cruz as Dr Culber. Additions to S3 Book (David Ajala), Adira (Blu del Barrio), Gray (Ian Alexander) and Starfleet Commander-in-Chief Vance (Oded Fehr) will also return.

The trailer mentions a five mile diameter “gravitational anomaly” moving across the galaxy – clearly the formable threat hinted at in the synopsis. This season looks like another action-packed boon (with new Starfleet uniforms), reinforcing the community and family themes so important in S3. We get a glimpse of the Vulcans and Book’s cat, Grudge. Co-showrunner Michelle Paradise said a big question for Burnham is how she will continue to grow and move forward now that she’s running a spaceship and Adira’s (technically deceased) transgender boyfriend Gray, will eventually be visible to everyone, not just Adira. Other than that, we’ll just have to wait and see.

The fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery debuts on Paramount later this year.
