73rd Primetime Emmy Awards: Complete Deadline Coverage

A few names have been omitted, most notably Michael Constantine, who won an Emmy in 1970 for his performance as principal Seymour Kaufman in Room 222 – but the list was nonetheless a grim reminder of the toll taken by 2021. As Bridges and Jon Batiste performed live, images of big names like Charles Grodin and Christopher Plummer unfolded, as well as beloved icons like Danger! ‘s Alex Trebek and Cicely Tyson (The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman) and generational touchstones such as Dawn Wells (Gilligan’s Island) and Billie Hayes (Pufnstuf HR).

Of course, like every year, the omissions will get attention after the awards: Constantine, who also starred in My great Greek wedding, was the most glaring. Michael Nader and Jay Pickett were both ignored, a notable snub to daytime drama. Nader, who appeared in Dynasty, is perhaps most fondly remembered by All my kids viewers, and Pickett starred in General hospital.

Also missing was director Richard Donner (The twilight zone, the man of UNCLE), actress Tanya Roberts (charlie’s angels), writer Larry McMurtry (Lonely dove), and actors Ben Best (East + down) and DMX (The soul of a man).

Constantine, Donner, DMX, McMurtry and Pickett are listed on the In Memoriam list on the Emmy website.

While the audience largely refrained from applauding during the streak, the arrival at the end of SNLformer Weekend Update Macdonald presenter and Thread‘s Williams drew the most audible response.

Earlier in the evening, some winners and presenters spoke of specific losses: Jean Smart paid tribute to her late husband, actor Richard Gilliland; Kerry Washington remembered Williams; and Emmy host Cedric the Entertainer spoke about Biz Markie. SNL creator Lorne Michaels and John Oliver both referred to Macdonald.
