Romeo Langford has yet to play for the Boston Celtics this season. The sophomore from Indiana suffered a torn wrist tendon during the playoffs and underwent surgery. Recovery from that injury extended into the start of this season.
Around the All-Star break, it looked like Langford was going to have a chance to return to action in a short period of time. However, he was later placed in NBA health and safety protocols and has just returned from it.
Ahead of their Monday night game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Langford was doing field drills, which you can see below via the Celtics on NBC Sports Boston’s Twitter account.
And during his pre-game media availability, Celtics coach Brad Stevens spoke of Langford’s progress in his return to action.
“He was cleared to do all the exercises and work and everything in between by our cardiac specialists,” Stevens said. “Today was the first time he had done anything in a few weeks, and he felt it.”
This is certainly understandable, as Langford was isolated and unable to train while under NBA health and safety protocols.

That said, it’s good news that Stevens expects Langford to be cleared to play soon. But he also warned that Langford is unlikely to play long stints as he continues to recover and get back into basketball shape.
“I don’t know when he will be allowed to play, per se,” Stevens said of Langford. “It will definitely come soon and he will be active soon. But he won’t be able to play long runs for a while. We can maybe throw him in one of these next home games for a few minutes at a time, But that’s about all. “
This is probably the right way to manage Langford’s minutes. The Cs are still trying to figure out what’s inside him Langford, so it’s not like they’re going to make him play big minutes right away anyway. It’s not like he played meaningful minutes as a rookie.
The best course of action is to bring Langford back into the rotation. He could eventually become a lanky defensive stopper and potential slasher on the bench, but the Cs are by no means desperate to make him become immediately.
During his rookie season, Langford averaged 2.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game in 32 regular season appearances. He appeared in seven playoff games and scored eight points in total.
