CenterPoint Warns Customers of Incorrect Email Claiming Thousands of Dollars

CenterPoint is warning its customers of an incorrect email claiming they owe thousands of dollars on their bill.

A viewer who shared a photo from her email said her average bill was $ 52, but this time her email shows she owed $ 202,102.16. It may be interesting to note that the amount starts in 2021 and ends on 0216. February 16, 2021 was the date of the coldest point of this historic winter storm.

ABC13 has contacted CenterPoint regarding the situation. CenterPoint initially responded that it was reviewing the situation.

They added, “Clients do not owe this amount. We will update our clients and media once we have a resolution.”

Just two hours later, a company spokesperson told ABC13 that the emails were sent in error “due to a recent technical issue caused by the power outage in the Houston area.”

They have promised to update clients later this afternoon.

Earlier this week, Houston police warned residents of people pretending to be CenterPoint Energy employees entering customer homes.

“We have reports of scoffers posing as [CenterPoint Energy] employees to gain access to homes to victimize occupants, “wrote Chief Art Acevedo.” Recovering outages in our area due to inclement weather does not require entering residences.

On Tuesday, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas warned that crooks are also turning to social media to prey on vulnerable people, asking energy customers to send their private account numbers via text message.

ERCOT said it did not need any information from customers affected by the outages to get back on track.
