Billionaires' Row – nicknamed the 57th Street in downtown Manhattan – has just crowned a new king.
The tallest tower in the area is officially 217 W. 57th St., called Central Park Tower.
A ceremony that took place Tuesday morning in the concrete shell of a duplex on the 107th floor marked the beginning of the construction of the condo, which has 131 floors and a height of 1,500 feet.
"It's now the tallest residential building in the world," says Gary Barnett, president of Extell, who co-developed the supertall with Shanghai Municipal Investment. "It will be the best building in New York City."
The 179 apartments in the building, which went on sale last fall and start on the 32nd floor, start at $ 6.9 million. The most expensive unit currently available is a five-bedroom on the 112th floor, asking for $ 63 million. The most expensive condos – like a three-story penthouse of an area of 15,898 square feet, according to New York magazine – could sell for more than $ 100 million, Mansion Global announced.
The Central Park tower is expected to be completed in 2020, when the first closures will take place.

Residents will have access to what Extell calls "one of the most exclusive private clubs in the world." Barnett appointed Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill as architects, after seeing a photo of the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai – which they also designed – in an onboard magazine, Barnett said Tuesday. The glass and steel facade of the Central Park Tower is 300 feet above the street, with views of Central Park to the north-facing apartments.
Seven floors at the base of Central Park Tower will house New York's first Nordstrom store, which will open on October 24.
The highest current residential building in New York (and the world) is 432 Park Ave., which measures 1,396 feet – 154 feet from the height of the Central Park Tower Tower.
The World One Mumbai, India, will take over 432 Park once completed, with an expected height of 1,450 feet. The Central Park Tower will also be superior to this one.
