Gaming lifestyle company Razer may seem odd to coronavirus-face mask protection, but based on its Project Hazel concept design for a N95-class face helmet, it brings some notable ideas to add digital intelligence to the table.

For example, it has active ventilation and self-sterilization, with a separate case that can charge it wirelessly and has a UV sterilizer. It uses replaceable filters and rechargeable fans on the pods, which aims to make it a durable solution.

Razer’s little something adds some lighting. It’s not just for the pretty ones: the LEDs on the pods indicate the state of charge, and there are also internal LEDs to make your mouth visible in low light. And the pods have built-in audio processing algorithms to make your voice much clearer and more natural.

The mask has silicone on the edges for an airtight seal and adjustable earrings, and you can adjust the amount of airflow for maximum comfort and protection. In addition, it is available in several sizes. And it’s transparent so people can see your mouth moving.

Razer isn’t the first to reinvent the high-tech face shield – there is this and this and this, for example – and it will not be the last. But Razer brings its distinctive design aesthetic to the drafting table.

Will this ever become a reality? Who knows. And even if it does, it probably wouldn’t be affordable for the people who need it the most. Still, Razer’s heart (and brain) seems to be in the right place.
