Two very different fashion icons were honored at one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies of the fashion sector in New York on Monday night: Jennifer Lopez and Barbie.
The duo was part of a host of personalities recognized by the Fashion Designers Council of America (CFDA) during its annual awards, often dubbed the "Oscars of the Fashion World".

"I love fashion since I was little, I grew up in the Bronx and here, and among all these creators, being honored is only a dream," said the singer and actress on the red carpet, adding: "I'm wearing Ralph Lauren, another Bronx native."
The Mattel Barbie doll received, at a somewhat unusual turn, the CFDA Board of Directors' tribute for its influence on fashion – as well as for its esteemed designer collaborations – over the years. Last 60 years. Model and actress Yara Shahidi presented the award, Barbie's official Instagram account displaying a picture of the doll in Diane von Furstenberg's custom look.
Von Furstenberg, CFDA President, also caused a sensation at the awards ceremony by wearing a fake torch on the red carpet. The designer told her guests that her appearance marked the transfer of her position to Tom Ford, who now assumes the presidency of the organization.
"I'm very excited to talk to the group and try to encourage them to think about positive change," she told CNN before taking her place at the ceremony. "It's so necessary."

Designer Brandon Maxwell won one of the most coveted awards of the evening: he was named designer of women's clothing of the year. A native of Texas, who made headlines last month with Lady Gaga's Met Gala outfits, has become a staple of the New York fashion scene since the launch of her neat and feminine line in 2015.
"I'm here with my fiance and my friends, and I'm just excited to be invited even into the room," explained the designer, adding, "I think in fashion, we're always looking forward to it and I'm just work on the next one for September right now. "
A brief history of the red carpet
A total of 11 awards were presented at the ceremony on Monday night. Among the other winners, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have won the fifth CFDA Fashion Award in recent years for their brand The Row. Emily Adams Bode has been named Emerging Designer of the Year, while Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen has been awarded the Valentino Garavani International Award and Giancarlo Giammetti.
And many other fashion personalities have appeared on the red carpet. Gigi Hadid arrived in a Louis Vuitton gray suit with a pleated skirt alongside the brand's artistic director and nominated Virgil Abloh. Ciara was one of the last to arrive, dressed in a black silk dress with metallic embroidery, from Vera Wang.

"For me, I feel like life is going around in circles," she told CNN. "What started my career was the burkini, so shooting for (Sports Illustrated) and breaking so many perceptions and being around women, who wear very little or nothing at all, felt so unbelievable."
