Taylor Simone Ledward tearfully honored her late husband, Chadwick Boseman, at the 30th Gotham Awards on Monday, while accepting the Actor’s Tribute Award for the “Black Panther” star.
Ledward’s virtual appearance was his first public appearance since Boseman died in August at age 43 after a private battle with colon cancer.
She said it was an honor to receive the posthumous tribute on Boseman’s name “in recognition not only of his deep work, but also of his impact on this industry and this world.”
“Chad, thank you. I love you. I’m so proud of you. Continue to enlighten us, ”she said during the moving speech.
Ledward described the “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” star as the most honest person she has ever met.
“Because he didn’t just tell the truth, he actively sought it out: in himself, in those around him and in the moment,” she said, according to People. and the Wrap. “The truth can be a very easy thing for oneself to avoid, but if one does not live in the truth then it is impossible to live according to the divine purpose of your life. And that’s how he lived his life, day after day. Imperfect and determined.
“He knew how to give himself fully at every moment, to be totally present in his own life and in the lives of the people he has become. He’s been fortunate enough to live many lives in his focused life, ”continued Ledward. “He developed his understanding of what it meant to be the nothing, the one and the whole. “A container to pour in and take out,” he says. He harnessed the power to let go and let God’s love shine through.
The actor of “Marshall”, “Get On Up”, “42” and “Da 5 Bloods” was also nominated for the best actor award for his work in his latest film, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, but the award went to Riz Ahmed for “Sound of Metal”.
Ahmed was sure to recognize Boseman in his speech as well.
“Creativity is not a solo sport. And so with that in mind, I want to thank all of the other nominees for their work and inspiration. And in particular Chadwick Boseman, I found his work truly inspiring in the way he conducted himself with such dignity and humanity to be an example to all of us and to actors of my generation.
The Gotham Awards, hosted by the Independent Filmmaker Project, took place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, and guests and nominees attended in person and virtually.
Boseman’s legacy was also honored at the “MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time” special in December. His “Avengers” teammates Don Cheadle and Robert Downey Jr. presented the late star with the Hero of Ages.
