CLEVELAND, Ohio – The chairman of the Ohio State University board resigned sharply Friday morning.
Mike Gasser, whose appointment was due to end in 2021, raised personal and private concerns in an e-mail addressed to President Michael Drake and the Board of Directors.
The e-mail, sent around 9 am, was as follows:
"As of now, I am resigning from my duties as a director at Ohio State University. I can no longer devote the time and energy necessary to the proper exercise of fiduciary duties. For this reason and for personal and private matters, I submit my resignation. It has been an honor to serve as a trustee for 7 years. I hope you will respect my privacy and my decision. "
The major media focus is on OSU after the release of an independent report on former physician Michael Strauss.
An investigation revealed that Strauss had mistreated at least 177 students from 1979 to 1998. University officials have not informed the relevant authorities nor taken the necessary steps to remedy his actions, according to the report.

Gasser was appointed by Governor John Kasich in 2012.
"Mr. Gasser's services in the state of Ohio are greatly appreciated," said university spokesman Chris Davey in a statement. "He has been a tremendous chair and board member. We wish him every success, and as Executive Vice President, Tim Smucker will chair next week's Board meeting. "
