Champion Edition, coming in November

It was in August 2020 that we first found out that Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition would be getting an entire fifth season of additional DLC content with five new characters, but while the first four were named at the time, the last has been a mystery until today.

During their Summer Update broadcast on TwitchGaming, Capcom unveiled the 45th and final character to join the Street Fighter 5 roster: Luke, a brand new character introduced to the series today. Check out his trailer below.

“Street Fighter 5 was developed to pay homage to the past, but Luke will give us a glimpse of the future,” director Nakayama said as he prepared to reveal the trailer. “He’s going to expand the world of Street Fighter.”

“We are convinced that Luke will be a great addition to the game and that he has a bright future in the world of Street Fighter,” said producer Shuhei Matsumoto.

Luke appears to be a type of mixed martial arts fighter who can specialize in kickboxing as his primary style. Most of the attacks used in his trailer are punches, although he features a rolling kick that appears to be overload.

While Capcom hasn’t addressed any of Luke’s System V abilities, he does a bit of charging that seems to enhance some of his attacks when successful. His next punch after that charge bounces Ryu off the wall for a longer combo.

He clearly activates one of his triggers at some point and appears to have the ability to send projectile-like sparks from his punches that traverse the length of the screen.

We’ve put together a handful of screenshots so you can appreciate some of the character details to come:

Especially with how much the devs have mentioned and focused on developing the Street Fighter storyline throughout Season 5, we’re inclined to think that there are some great story-related projects in store for the future. Luke. He can pave the way for the transition to (unannounced) Street Fighter 6, and could potentially be the central protagonist of this Alex-style game in Street Fighter 3, although we don’t want to go too far.

Luke is slated for release in November.
