“I knew we couldn’t put on a big show, that we had to invent something else, so I got the idea of a small procession [procession] who would descend the stairs of the Grand Palais and pass under arches of flowers, ”explains designer Chanel Virginie Viard about her spring 2021 haute couture collection, presented Tuesday morning in Paris. “Like a family celebration, a wedding …”

The show was sunny and intimate, intended to evoke a bohemian ceremony in the south of France. Only a few members of Chanel’s inner circle witnessed: Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Lily-Rose Depp and her mother, Vanessa Paradis, all sat in the socially distant front row. (Unfortunately, no Kristen Stewart this time.) As the models paraded past them on a rose petal runway to sweet love songs like “Be My Baby,” Cotillard and Paradis smiled as if they were theirs. own girls walking down the aisle. I half-expected them to grab a tissue.

The whole thing was like a Valentine’s Day card coming to life, complete with a color palette of Sweethearts. But the clothes were cool – surprisingly, for something as traditionally overdone as haute couture. (Or weddings.) Pieces like a silk button up with a large tulle skirt had ease and sophistication, balancing out the otherwise girly aesthetic. The sizes were cut low, allowing models to walk with their hands in their pockets. (And show a hint of a stomach, adding some necessary sensuality for a wedding in the south of France.) The fabrics were as light as confectionery sugar. And everyone wore sensitive heels. You got the feeling that dancing would follow later.

It’s always been hard to imagine tailoring fitting into real life, and it’s especially true now. But Viard, who has always been a little softer and more sentimental than his predecessor, Karl Lagerfeld, has managed to paint a picture that is both dreamy and down-to-earth. I wanted to book a one-way ticket immediately.
