Chargers activate Austin Ekeler off IR, RB eligible to play Week 12

A major hamstring sidelined Austin Ekeler shortly after week four. Eight weeks later, he is finally approaching a return to the field.

The Los Angeles Chargers announced on Saturday that their star running back had been activated out of the injured reserve, making him eligible to play against the Bills on Sunday.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday that Los Angeles was planning to nominate Ekeler to return from the IR this week, which gave him the opportunity to head to the training ground and re-acclimatize to the game. Saturday’s update says the dynamic back tends to play.

Since Ekeler lost Los Angeles Week 4 to the Buccaneers, the team has relied on a full-back committee made up of rookie Joshua Kelley, Justin Jackson, Troymaine Pope and, starting in the week 9, Kalen Ballage. Ekeler’s activation could mean Ballage, who has been listed as questionable for Week 12 with ankle and calf injuries, could sit against Buffalo.

The quartet have done well in his absence, but there’s no doubt that the boost provided by Ekeler’s return will certainly be welcome.
