“For almost two decades, I held my tongue and even found excuses for certain events that still traumatize me today,” she tweeted.

Charisma Carpenter posted a lengthy social media post on Wednesday in which she accused Joss Whedon of “hostile and toxic” behavior on the sets of Buffy the vampire slayer and its consequences, angel.

“For almost two decades, I held my tongue and even found excuses for certain events that still traumatize me today,” she began.

“Joss Whedon abused his power on numerous occasions while working together on sets of Buffy the vampire slayer and Angel,” she wrote about the show’s creator. The disturbing incidents triggered a chronic physical condition from which I still suffer. It is with a heavy, pounding heart that I say that I have managed in isolation and, at times, destructively. “

Whedon had no comments at the time of posting.

Carpenter claimed Whedon found her alleged bogus account “amusing”, claiming he was especially cruel to her while she was pregnant, even calling her “fat” in front of the cast and crew.

“He was mean and biting, openly denigrating others and often playing favorites,” she wrote. When Whedon found out she was pregnant, he asked the actress if she was “going to keep her” and “manipulated my femininity and my faith in a manipulative way against me,” Carpenter alleged.

Speaking of the pregnancy and the stress, Carpenter wrote that all her joy was “sucked in right away,” adding, “I made excuses for her behavior and suppressed my own pain.”

The actress was an Original Series regular on The WB Network / UPN’s Buffy the vampire slayer, playing posh high school student Cordelia Chase. She was a series regular for the first three seasons on cult favorite Sarah Michelle Gellar before her character moved to co-star opposite David Boreanaz in Buffy spin off angel before its fourth season. She was the main woman on angel during four of its five seasons, returning to guest star in its 100th episode of its final season.

Amber Benson, who played fan favorite Tara Maclay Buffy, tweeted his support for Carpenter on Wednesday. While the two never overlapped during their time Buffy, they have remained friendly via the fan convention circuit over the years. (Benson and Carpenter make a fan event at the end of the month together.) Benson did it again in seasons four and five of Buffy, before being promoted to regular in season six before his character was killed.

Carpenter’s claims come seven months after Ray Fisher accused Whedon of abusive behavior on the set of Justice League reshoots, which the filmmaker oversaw after original director Zack Snyder left.

Fisher’s complaints saw WarnerMedia launch an investigation into the Justice League starts again and Carpenter said she was part of the investigation.

As the investigation continued, Whedon announced on November 24, 2020 that he was resigning from Nevers, a series he was working on with WarnerMedia’s HBO, saying in a statement, “I’m really exhausted, and I’m coming back to my martial energy for my own life, which is also on the verge of an exciting change.”

A few weeks later, on December 11, 2020, WarnerMedia announced that it had completed the investigation with “corrective action” taken. Yet the story was not over yet. Fisher said he would not be working on a production with DC Film boss Walter Hamada due to what Fisher claimed to be the executive interfering with the investigation. Fisher was then kicked out of the next Flash movie like Cyborg.

Fisher thanked Carpenter for speaking on Wednesday, writing on Twitter: “Charisma Carpenter is one of the bravest people I know. I am eternally grateful for his courage and for lending his voice to the Justice League investigation. Read its truth. Share its truth. Protect her at all costs. ‘It’s time.’ “
